Hey, where’s the roof?!

In case you still haven’t found an apartment and are on the lookout, there are a few tips to consider before you plunge into the new life of roommates et al.

Your roommates will be your family from now on. It’s just like a marriage, only that you’ll end up getting married to two or more people of the same gender as you (in most cases). It’s bound to be the most interesting time of your life, and you can have some real roller-coaster ride moments if you choose the right ones to be with!

It’s always a neat idea to team up with people from your batch or class or company because it makes life easier in terms of getting to know about new things in a new country. It’s a very comforting feeling to have someone around who also knows zilch about what to do next. At least you have company and can start anew.

On the other hand, you could also team up with seniors who have been there and done that. A vast amount of experience is then at your fingertips, provided they are willing to help, of course. Staying with people who have set themselves up can be of immense help if you’re looking for the right information in a short span of time, but you may have to compromise with being out of the loop with the newbies.

But whatever said and done, make sure that you have your mind set on making it WORK. Relationships with roommates require more work than anything else because you constantly have to communicate and care for each other while maintaining a respectable distance for their privacy.

Okay, was that good enough for a prep talk? :) .. Good, get going on the apartment hunt then!

  1. Well done aunty…I know, its really important to stay with people you get along well…. Sometimes, if you have not met the individual, it is better to go on your gut feeling, based on the first impression of that person. Think what will be logically right for you…also. And also, there is need for you to be flexible in all this.

  2. Very rightly said Lee.. having good roomamates is important and more than that what matters is having a good relationship with them which requires a great deal of adjustment on your part too.. ur rapport with ur roomamates decides whether ur life will b in peace or in pieces!

  3. Well I didn’t get to taste the thrills and adventures of moving in with newbies as I moved in with “seniors”.According to me, its definitely a super advantage to move in with them – helps you settle down that much quicker.Well about mingling with newcomers, that’ll always happen as you’re bound to meet them in class. Goes without saying, of course that there’s always the adjustment part, be it with the newcomers or new-seniors :-)

  4. Hmm I also feel its better to stay with seniors. Again it depends very much on who you stay with. If you get a good bunch they will pamper you, guide you and be your first resort and your best resource.
I’ve never had issues with roomies, but for my 3 months stay in Cali, where I had a tough rime..

  5. Believe me ,it was diff for me.

It all depends on whom you stay with.If you got a decent guy/gal it is a fun to hang around….

  6. social dynamics people!! hanging out with seniors having cars is all so well but when you get your own vehicle take care not to forget who took you to groceries for the first time!! people tend to forget that!!

on the flip side hanging out with somebody more ur ‘age’ could be fun!! movies, bar hopping and gambling suddenly become more fun

so to conclude, a very very comprehensive piece of work this article!! choose what u want to do and then decide ur roomates!! it cannot get any east!!
